Community Water Supply and Sanitation Project in Mtwara,
Tansania (2005–07 & 2008-10)

The project is a joint undertaking of WaterFinns and Tanzania Water and Environmental Sanitation (TWESA). TWESA is a Tanzanian non-profit sharing and non-political organization that works in the field of water supply and sanitation to relieve suffering of disaster victims in emergencies and poor communities in needy areas through provision of improved and protected water supply and environmental sanitation facilities.

The project aims at improving the sustainability of water supply and sanitation in selected villages in Mtwara Rural District in Southern Tanzania through development of user managed water supply systems.

The first phase of the CWSSP was implemented in 2005 – 2007 as a pilot case in ten villages namely. During this period a total of 19 shallow wells were rehabilitated and 25 000 people have benefited from the improved water supply system. The second phase of the project will be implemented in 2008 – 2010 in ten new villages in Mtwara Rural District.

The project is implemented by community mobilization and water demand promotion, well rehabilitation, community participatory training on hygiene and sanitation, training community water committees and local government authorities on the management of water user entities, and financial management training.
